A dongle is a small piece of hardware that connects to another device to provide it with additional functionality.[1] In computing, the term is primarily associated with hardware providing a copy protection mechanism for proprietary software, in which the dongle must be attached to the system on which the software is installed in order for it to function.
The first dongles were attached to the PC parallel port of the IBM PC via the DB-25 Centronics plug to prevent unauthorised use of proprietary software, while still allowing normal operation of the printer.

ドングル（Dongle）は、コンピュータに接続する小さな装置を指す俗語。

語源[編集]

由来は不明である。
ジャーゴンファイルの「dongle」の項によれば、1992年の早期にRainbow Technologiesというドングルの製造者が、発明者の「Don Gall」に由来する、と宣伝のコピーにしていたことがあったが、これは宣伝用の作り話であることが確認されている。[1]

その丈により、ロングスカート、ミニスカート、ミディスカートに分けられる。スカートの長さの流行と景気の動向との関連などが取り上げられることもある。
ロングスカートは着用者の膝よりも丈が長くなるもので、総丈70cm以上あるものを呼ぶことが多い。ロングでも更に丈が長く、くるぶし以上のものはマキシスカートと呼ばれる。
ミニスカートは総丈が膝より上までのもので、総丈45cmから50cmのものが多い。更に丈の短いミニスカートはマイクロミニスカート（マイクロミニ）と呼ばれる。
総丈がちょうど膝程度の長さのものがミディスカート（ニーロングスカート、膝丈スカートなど）である。
