Some French scholars of Islam consider it absurd to conflate the burkini with hard-line Islamism, not least because the latter would not permit women to bathe publicly in the first place

It may appear bizarre, or frivolous, to argue that women should bare more flesh

burqini (or burkiniArabicبوركيني‎‎, portmanteau of burqa and bikini) swimsuit is a type ofswimsuit for women. The design is intended to comply with the Quranic instruction for Muslim women to dress modestly.[1] The suit covers the whole body except the face, the hands and the feet, whilst being light enough to enable swimming. It looks rather like a full-length wetsuit with built-inhood, but somewhat looser and made of swimsuit material instead of neoprene.[2]
In August 2009, a woman in France was prevented from swimming in a public pool wearing a burqini, amidst ongoing controversy about Islamic dress. The action was justified by reference to a law that forbids swimming in street clothes.[3] In August 2016, the mayor of Cannes banned the swimsuits, citing a possible link to Islamic extremism.[4]

A brief history of the bikini – and the garment's surprising Roman origins

On this day in 1946, the modern bikini was unveiled by a French engineer (seriously) named Louis Réard. Here we look back at the history of the essential summer holiday accessory...
Strange origins

Believe it or not, bikinis actually date back to Roman times, when the skimpier alternative to the toga - featuring a bandeau top - was thought practical for ladies playing ancient sports. However, along with central heating and chariot racing, the garment slipped from view for centuries.

On this day in 1946, the bikini swimsuit was introduced by French designer Louis Reard at a popular swimming pool in Paris. [“Bikini,” Wayne Theibaud, 1964, oil on canvas.]

  • In 1946 the USA exploded an atom bomb at Bikini, an atoll in the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific. Not long after, a scanty two-piece swimming costume caused a sensation on the beaches of France. Its effect was so great that the French called it the bikini. The word seems to have appeared first in English in a US newspaper, the Waterloo Daily Courier, on 26 June 1947. In an article on swimwear it reports: ‘The French, it seems, have a new suit planned that is about twice as wide as a piece of string. It's so explosive that they call it the Bikini.’
