queer (1922)

‘A broad-based group of queers committed to radical, non-violent direct action and civil disobedience’. These words were used to describe OutRage! – the most prominent gay rights direct action group in the UK until disbanding in 2011.
When Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005, the question of whether a member of the Royal Family could marry in a civil ceremony had to be constitutionally clarified. These posters are a good example of the topical slogans and imagery utilised by OutRage!, which was founded in 1990 following the murders of several gay men in London and an increase in targeted policing of gay people.

black-hat hackers, white-hat hackers

A Solution to Hackers? More Hackers

By KEVIN ROOSE

What if the problem we face is not too many black-hat hackers, but too few white-hat ones?

A black hat hacker is an individual with extensive computer knowledge whose purpose is to breach or bypass internet security. Black hat hackers are also known as crackers or dark-side hackers. The general view is that, while hackers build things, crackers break things.

Soap Opera

Wall Street, Climbing Sharply, Skips Washington's 'Soap Opera'

By NELSON D. SCHWARTZ

The stock surge of recent months, ignited by policy prospects, is now driven by strong earnings and other factors that seem impervious to politics.

A soap opera or soap, is a serial drama on television or radio that examines the lives of many characters, usually focusing on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama.[1] The term soap opera originated from such dramas in the past being typically sponsored by soap manufacturers.[2]

Origin of the genre[edit]

The first serial considered to be a "soap opera" was Painted Dreams, which debuted on October 20, 1930 on Chicago radio station WGN.[3] Early radio series such as Painted Dreams were broadcast in weekday daytime slots, usually five days a week, when most of the listeners would be housewives; thus, the shows were aimed at and consumed by a predominantly female audience.[2]

Vending Machine

自動販賣機(中國稱:自動售貨機;香港稱:汽水機)是藉由驗鈔機與顧客交易的全自動機器,能協助顧客購買例如零食、飲料、酒類、香菸及彩票等產品(有別於有收銀員的商舖)。
An automatic stamp and postcard vending machine, early 20th century, Japan[4]
The first modern coin-operated vending machines were introduced in London, England in the early 1880s, dispensing postcards. The machine was invented by Percival Everitt in 1883 and soon became a widespread feature at railway stations and post offices, dispensing envelopes, postcards, and notepaper. The Sweetmeat Automatic Delivery Company was founded in 1887 in England as the first company to deal primarily with the installation and maintenance of vending machines. In 1893, Stollwerck, a German chocolate manufacturer, was selling its chocolate in 15,000 vending machines. It set up separate companies in various territories to manufacture vending machines to sell not just chocolate, but cigarettes, matches, chewing gum and soap products.[5]
The first vending machine in the U.S. was built in 1888 by the Thomas Adams Gum Company,[6] selling gum on New York City train platforms. The idea of adding games to these machines as a further incentive to buy came in 1897 when the Pulver Manufacturing Company added small figures, which would move around whenever somebody bought some gum from their machines. This idea spawned a whole new type of mechanical device known as the "trade stimulators".

Your flight is boarding soon, but you forgot to pack warm clothes. What to do? Uniqlo is betting that you might consider a lightweight down jacket from a vending machine.

Japanese retailer Uniqlo plans to roll out 10 vending machines this month and next in U.S. airports and malls, part of a scaled-down expansion plan after sales at the company’s American stores fell short of forecasts.
