"short takes"

Among the features in this issue's Short Takes is one for the logophiles. Merriam-Webster Dictionary showed Caltech a little love, referencing its people, research, and history in several of its usage examples online.

The term "short takes" originated from the film industry.
As we know, a film is composed of numerous scenes, some are very short, may last only seconds and some are longer. After the cinematographer has taken a certain scene, he or the director will decide whether to keep it or have it taken all over again. When all recordings are finished, the production team will have them sorted out and edited into a movie. Those brief recordings of scenes are thus called "short takes”.
