“The Muppets,” premiering Sept. 22 on ABC, marks the biggest attempt in 20 years to resurrect one of entertainment’s most beloved franchises as a force on prime-time television. The troupe of fur-and-foam misfits formed an indelible bond with their original fans—many of whom are now in their 40s. In today’s treacherous TV climate, of course, they could be roadkill.



The Muppets are returning to prime time with a show skewed toward their now-grownup fans. After 20 years, can they revive the TV franchise?

Cleaning up road kill and maintaining runways may not sound like cutting-edge investments. But banks and funds with big money seem to think so.
